Children: so what's the deal, huh?
Post Body

I want to ask a couple questions as it pertains to children and libertarian philosophy. I consider myself a very strong libertarian however, there are times when I find myself in heated arguments with other libertarians.

So... I want the options of the people here so I can see what others think. I will try and make this as short as possible.

1). Abortion/Right to Choose.

I believe a woman has the right to choose. I believe that as an individual human being, a woman can decide for themselves, whats best for themselves. However, having said that. I believe there is a time when the fetus becomes viable outside the womb and at that time can be classified as an individual human being, deserving all the rights and freedoms on any other human being, including the mother. Medically speaking, this is now somewhere around 5 to 5 1/2 month.

So, if the child is viable and can be considered an individual since it can survive without the need of the mother, the mother looses her right to choose.

SO... question: what is the philosophy of libertarianism? Is it the right of the mother to choose regardless of the fetal status, the right of the mother to choose until such time as the fetus becomes viable, or the discussion doesn't center around the right of the mother to choose, but the definition as to when a fetus legally becomes an individual human being?

2). Parenting and Guardianship of Children

So, assuming the baby was not aborted and brought into this life. A child is incapable of surviving or defending its rights to freedom, liberty and life. The parent(s) therefore have to assume the responsibility of defending the child's rights until such time the child comes of age and can be independent.

I believe if you decide to bring a child into the world, you understand the responsibility and agree to the terms of that "contract." That you will enforce the contract by protecting the child's rights and will ensure that the child is prepared for independent living.

I think it is straight forward that if a parent(s) was to harm, torture, or abuse the child, that parent(s) has violated the law just like assault against a grown adult and must suffer the legal consequences of that action.

But what about indoctrination? What if the parents ensure the child is healthy, educated and meets the letter of the contract, but corrupts the mind of the child, producing a serial killer or mass murderer? This is a difficult question because how do you evaluate people who have done their best and the child still turns out evil. but assuming the parents actively did corrupt the mind of the child which now endangers the community, how is this handled or judged from a legal perspective, or can it even be judged?
