Since I got my MUBI subscription I’ve been obsessed with the sheer amount of African film they have on offer! Netflix has a steady stream of nollywood movies which my mum and I have been steadily making our way through, but the continent is bigger than Nigeria, and a lot of (modern) Nollywood suffers from being super contrived and cliché imo. Doesn’t make it less of a fun genre and there are plenty of exceptions but i’ve been itching for my chance to discover more variety. MUBI has lots of classics and niche films alike from all over the continent. Recently watched In The Name of Christ (from Côte D’ivoire) and loved it. Then Atlantics (Senegal) which was very moving. Does anyone have any other African film favourites? I literally don’t think i have ever seen any film from the continent mentioned on this sub and i’m ready to change that lol
