In the midst of his break-up with Nickel Creek and divorce from his wife at 27 mandolin prodigy Chris Thile decided to try to create a piece of music that combined classical music, bluegrass, and the traditional verse-chorus music structure. A song in 4 movements, the song was regarded as highly ambitious and a plethora of different reactions soon ensued. As seen in the documentary How to Grow a Band reactions to the piece ranged from heckling and no applause at all from audiences to stand ovations. What do you guys think of the piece? Do you think it' gonna be remembered by the bluegrass community in 20 years? Do you think it crosses the line of ambition into pretension? What do you think of the lyrics and how it reflects the music? I personally love the piece and I'm interested to hear what other people have to say about it.
