As everyone knows, Katy Perry's career has been in a nosedive ever since the Witness drama in 2017. She hasn't had a number one song since her Prism era, and Smile (her album after Witness) debuted at number 5 on Billboard 200 and then quickly fell off completely. Her new album release has gone absolutely terribly. (I'm presuming you aren't living under a rock so I won't go into the details). It seems pretty safe to say that 143 will barely chart and will also quickly disappear from the charts.
Clearly her reputation and career are both on life support. So that brings me to my question:
You are going to get a million dollars if you can manage to salvage her public image and get her next album to be a success (I know success is vague, so I guess I'll say it debuts at number one and has at least one number one song)
How would you go about doing this? what would you advise her to do? I'm talking with PR, songwriting, producers, genre etc. This is just a thought experiment for kicks and giggles
She did say it was supposed to be satire. I donāt get it but sure. š¤·š¾āāļø
I LOVE PETER.
And when she says āI crashed into you like so many wrecks do, too impaired by my youth to know what to doā I died. If thatās not something so many of us can relate to then idk what is.
Yes but Beyonce has good songs, Katy doesnāt lol.
I guess my point is that it takes multiple people to write āIāll love you for lifetimes, I know you feel it, Iām gonna love you til the endā and itās like why? Lol
Taylor has actually been sounding well recently on her latest tour. Katy not so much.
It was her, Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff, and some of her then-boyfriend Joe Alwyn helping with a few piano melodies. Some songs were all her. Thatās it. Either herself or 2-3 other people. Katyās songs take up to a dozen people to write basic ass lyrics. Thereās no way Katy or anyone in her circle would think to write āI crashed into you like so many wrecks do, too impaired by my youth to know what to doā or āIf this is the long haul, howād we get here so soon? Will you forgive me soul when youāre too wise to trust me and too old to care?ā like Taylor.
Taylor also wrote a whole ass song during lockdown about Covid-19 thatās literally poetry. Yes, Iām a hardcore shameless Swiftie.
I think she surrounds herself with yes men and people who clearly donāt tell her her songs are cheesy. At this point I wonder why her label even pays for them. I guess theyāre contractually obligated, but what about when the contract is up? Lol.
The song is meant to evoke a childlike, innocent, and starry-eyed kind of crush or love, going back to the early 2000s vibe with the sound and lyrics: mentioning the game āmarry, kiss, killā, GTA, kissing in the backseat of a car, American Pie, these are all early 2000s references, which is when she wouldāve been a pre-teen, and a time a lot of us can relate to. Itās supposed to give nostalgia kind of vibes. Remember being young and having a high school crush and how you felt so giddy? No? Ok. Itās basically fuzzy feelings. Clearly you donāt know how to read between the lyrics and understand references if you took that as a literal lyric.
She was onto something when she was working with Zedd. Her sound was better, and the songs were bops. Then she was like ānope! Going back to the cheese festā and gave us Smile. Go back to Zedd, reinvent your sound, stop giving us cheesy half ass girl power anthems. Iām tired of being uplifted. She needs to go in a completely different direction. Also better lyrics. Her lyrics are soooo cheesy and have literally no substance. There was one song I Prism I really liked until she said āopen me, open sesameā. Then on 143 she said ācrawlinā on me like a centipedeā or something??? Honestly the songs with features had decent beats, they just wouldāve been better with just the person featuring and without Katy. Also half the album was features. One or two are ok, but half???? Not ok when you only have 11 songs.
Stop trying to relive your hay day of the 2010s and move on to 2024. Also learn how to sing live.

I think going back to her pop/rock roots like One of the Boys would be good for her career vs focusing on these pop/electronic flops.
