Hey! For those who remember the original final level for Knee Deep in the Dead, it was a bit of a shock seeing the Bruiser Brothers for the first time. Other than that, the level wasn't particularly difficult or even memorable (except for the final scene when Doomguy jumps to the Deimos base).
John Romero did not design the original E1M8 map, but he re-created it with his own personal touch, and despite certain limitations (using a 1993 engine, stock textures, and shareware enemies/weapons), he made it incredibly challenging - it's about on par with the tougher maps in the later episodes (very clever usage of hazards and gunners).
I created a walkthrough video on ultra-violence with 100% kills, items, and secrets from a pistol start that demonstrates that while difficult, it's still a beatable level (and a fun challenge at that). The 100% kills is approximate since I'm pretty sure it's not possible to kill all the enemies in the final room so there may be a couple left over, but otherwise it's a complete walkthrough of the map. This is using GZDoom as the source port and I hope you guys enjoy.
