[PSA] Topic: Be smart when you report a post, or we may not be able to help.

So I just wanted to write a brief PSA on the topic of reporting. To get right down to the point, a particular user has reported someone numerous times as "impostor" or "impersonating" but failed to provide a single word of information beyond that.

To remedy this, and future issues, let me explain how to report a post here or anywhere else on Reddit.

If you have a post that does not follow the subreddit rules, or if you catch someone being a malicious user in general, typically you have the ability to report someone. Now, reporting all their posts as "impersonating" does nothing except show me the word "impersonating" and leave me to close each report having done nothing.

However, if you run into a user that needs reporting, check the sidebar, or subreddit information area on mobile, and message the moderators.

Then simply do the following:

  • Tell me what post you are reporting, such as actually having a link for the post.

  • Why are you reporting that post to the subreddit?

  • What is your proof of what they did? Can you provide screenshots of conversations or other information that is likely to convince me you aren't just some angry user?

If you take the few seconds it requires to tell me what you're reporting, why, and including at least a screenshot or two as to proof of their actions, I am more than happy to permaban someone into next-tuesday (of which they'll still be banned, hence permaban).

However, if you report someone, say what they did, but I cannot tell if you're telling the truth after glancing at their post... Then I can't do anything, you've wasted your time, and you've wasted my time.

So report wisely, be smart, and remember to actually tell us: who, why, and what proof.
