On Lethal Weapon 4, 20 years later
Post Body

I know it's a couple months too late for this post, but I honestly feel like Lethal Weapon 4 is better than a lot of people say. Even 3 is, but that's another story entirely.

Granted, there is still a bit of a dip in quality. Riggs essentially goes through a similar arc that Murtaugh had just gone through in the previous movie. With retirement looming, Murtaugh has to come to terms with being "too old for this shit." The scene that so adequately matches that in the fourth film is when Martin tells Roger that he couldn't keep up in the ring, or when they were chasing the suspect. This leads to a poignant moment in the locker room where both men repeat to themselves, "We're not too old for this shit."

The film also had a welcome addition in Chris Rock, providing for hilarious interactions with the other characters. "What do I look like, the fucking Crip's accountant? Look at this badge, bitch. Look at the gun." Or the whole Afghanistan conversation with Leo.

On the downside though, it felt like some of the legendary characters got reduced to be barely important. Nick and Carrie, even Trish to a degree. Lorna as well. Their screentime was limited. However, it seems like this was just a case of trying to balance out the new cast and story.

The one moment that, I feel, is the definitively best in the film, and possibly in the series, is the ending. The photo with all of the Murtaughs, Leo, Lorna, Riggs and Captain Murphy. The last lines of the film summarize the theme of the series, one that is touched on in the second and third films. "Are you all friends?" "No, we're family!" This is a moment that is earned, with eleven years between the movies, we've watched the cast grow over the years. We grew attached to Roger, to Martin. To their families. This is a touching moment that many movies struggle to emulate due to there not being that level of connection.

Overall, I feel like Lethal Weapon 4 is a good conclusion to the series. And while l would love for this next and final Lethal Weapon to be made, I'm satisfied with this ending.
