You wince a bit after hearing this, even with my soft tone of voice the words themselves sting, especially coming from me. Growing up you would have never thought that we'd be in a situation like this, seated across from each other as I let you know that your livelihood is at stake. There was a time you had pictured a very different future for us, but now you simply regarded those thoughts as the idle day dreams of a naïve young girl.

We had been friends, close ones, but nothing more. You watched as my high school crush became my college fiancé, and finally my husband. You found love elsewhere and resigned yourself to living a life of content struggle. Then your [husband/wife] landed a gig that was sure to elevate your status somewhat. A high paying position to become a live in caretaker for some well off couple, there weren't even any kids to deal with. The couple was willing to hire you both, it was too good to be true. These worries were confirmed when you finally met the couple, or rather when you met us. To say you were conflicted would be a vast understatement, but I seemed ecstatic at the thought of being able to be close with you again and my Sam didn't mind that we had known each other. The job was too good to turn down just because of old daydreams, so you agreed to come on board.

For a long time things were good, but while you were happy to enjoy life as it was it seemed that your [husband/wife] was not. That's why you're sitting in front of me now, looking at the still image of your [husband/wife] on my phone as they slip some jewelry into their pocket. You knew they always seemed to have a quiet resentment for how much better off we were, but you had no idea they were this greedy. I could see the hurt in your eyes as you processed this, I sigh before talking again.

"I... I know your living situation was pretty bad before this. That's why I had Sam reach out to [husband/wife] in the first place, but I can't... this isn't right." I could see the tears forming in your eyes, a lump was forming in my throat at the thought of going through with this. If your [husband/wife] was here now I'd be having this talk with them, and maybe that would be easier. Anything would be easier than this, and so I gave up.

"Look... this is the first time I've seen this happen. So if you promise to have a talk with them, I won't tell Sam and we can just leave it at that. I'll count that talk as your consequence or whatever," I softly chuckle as I look into your eyes, trying to convey with my own that I mean you no harm. I'm expecting you to be sad, or angry that I scared you so much, I'm not expecting you to hug me. You ambush me with the embrace, letting me know how thankful you are at a thousand words a minute. I laugh and tell you it's alright, then I hug you back.

I also wasn't expecting how good that would feel, us embracing each other like this. I'm not expecting way your breathing grows shallower as I do, or the look in your eyes as you lean back to face me. The kiss was definitely unexpected, especially considering that it came from me.
