You did it. Sure, it’s just an unpaid internship, but you made it against literally hundreds of other first-going-on-second university students, and in your first-choice company too. You know what haters will say; your aunt is on the board, obviously you will have made it in, duh… Except she does not even know you applied. You wanted to surprise her, and now you will. And no, your last names are different, there is no chance someone sifting through the intern application could have known about your relation.

Your department will be the Human Resources; since you mentioned in your application that you are hoping to research the methods of corporate motivation when you reach that stage, you are not very surprised when you are told you‘ll be dealing with internal discipline and corrections. You are, however, very surprised by what comes next.

“I’ll be doing w-what?”, you stutter, looking open-mouthed at your supervisor, not much older than you, but already handling herself with full confidence and near-boredom. “You’ll be spanking the employees who did not meet standards and need discipline”, she repeats slowly, as if talking to someone particularly dense. “It’s a trial programme and we think someone fresh and without any established connections in the company would be best to handle this to avoid any… Lasting embarrassment, shall we say, if it does not work out as planned. We’ll talk through the rules quickly, but your first appointment is at noon, her name is…”. You just do all you can to stop your heart jumping out of your mouth and she names your aunt.
