I’m curious because different cultures have different ways of naming their kids, like in Hispanic/Latino culture, they combine/hyphenate last names of both parents, which is why some kids have really long names.
But it’s also interesting because different people have different reasons for taking their spouse’s last name, sometimes because they don’t like the way their original last name sounds, sometimes because they don’t like the ideas associated with it (Ex: If your last name is Khan, it might be associated with Genghis Khan and Mongol colonization, if your last name is Gypsy, that’s a slur against Romani people and people of North Indian descent), but some people choose to keep their last name because of its historical significance or that it marks themselves as a survivor.
Historically, in heterosexual marriages, the wife changes her maiden name to her husband’s last name because she was seen as his property, or because men were seen as the one to carry the family’s last name and continue the lineage because of patriarchal practices. Even in today’s society, most straight married women still change their maiden name to their husband’s last name because of convenience. But what about in Sapphic marriages? What would you do? What would you prefer?
For me personally, I would prefer to keep my last name, and I would prefer my future wife to keep hers, too. But I wouldn’t mind if she wants me to change mine, or if she wants to change hers. It doesn’t matter to me.
