Seeking community input on 28 elmarit ASPH vs. Summaron
Post Body

TLDR: Looking to get either 28 Elmarit ASPH or 28 Summaron. 28 is not my preferred focal length, so even though the Elmarit is a objectively better value proposition, there is a place for the "novelty" aspect of the Summaron in my kit. Hoping to get input on this decision, as well as the performance of the Summaron on low-light workhorses like the M11 Monochrom and SL2-S

Hey all,

As I'm building out my kit, I'd like to get some input from folks who have used the Leica range of 28's. I know that other non-Leica brands produce excellent 28's, but I know that for me, they won't scratch the itch in the same way that Leica glass would, so I'd rather not bother spending the money. I primarily shoot street and architecture, but also occasionally dabble in landscapes. Here is some background into my current kit, followed by the lenses that I'm looking for advice on.

Current Bodies:

M2, M11 Monochrom, SL2-S

Current Glass:

16-18-21 Tri-Elmar, 35 Summilux ASPH v2, 50 Summilux ASPH v2

Considering (can get either at comparable prices new or used):

28 Elmarit ASPH: This is the logical choice. As everyone knows, this is a tiny lens that packs a big punch and is a great value proposition. I love its sharpness and modern rendering. It would be great just to slap it on an M body as a lightweight walkabout option. However, 28 isn't that far from the 35 focal length, which I do prefer. I worry that despite the value proposition and undoubtable quality of this glass, the similarities in terms of modern rendering with the 35 will mean that this lens gets left on the shelf more often than not.

28 Summaron: This is my heart's choice. Much like this, when I was choosing which 35 to purchase, it came down between the modern close focus and the classic steel rim reissue. In that case, I went with the more practical modern choice since 35 is my preference. However, I think that because 28 is not my preferred focal length, maybe this might be the one to make a "novelty" purchase. The rendering of this lens is beautiful for sure, and I love that it basically converts your body into a point and shoot camera. I worry, however, about the maximum aperature for a couple of reasons. First, and perhaps only I can decide this, is whether I would miss the shallow DoF that even a 2.8 can somewhat provide. Second, and probably more important, is how limiting the 5.6 would be. On the surface, this seems like a huge restriction, especially since I tend to do a lot of photography in the evening. However, I know that I also have 2 bodies with incredible low light performance in the Monochrom and SL2-S, so I'm not sure if the 5.6 would actually be all that limiting. Has anyone used it on these bodies, and if so, what are your experiences?

Thanks for your help!
