Looking for advice on representing myself in court

So basically I got a fine for “using my phone while driving” I did send them my licence and paid the fine originally however apparently wasn’t in time so I got a letter about pleading guilty and not guilty.

Long story short I was driving for work, stationary in traffic and I needed to look at a route for our next job on my colleagues phone. I literally had it in my hand for less than 5 seconds and a police officer came to the window and asked me to pull over.

She was obviously new as the older officers were talking her through the process. City of London police might I add. Anyway so I explained the situation I have a clean license anyway and then she said I would be receiving the 6 points and fine.

The letter they sent me wasn’t threatening as such but basically said that you can plead guilty and pay the fine or take it to court and maybe receive “a financial penalty you can’t afford” after some thought I thought actually do you know what I don’t agree with this so decided to plead not guilty and allocated a court date.

I am quite articulate I feel and I am going to go and present my argument as I genuinely feel that had it been a different maybe more experienced officer they would of handled it differently.

Whatever the outcome then fine I will deal with it but I just thought how many people receive these letters and don’t agree with the decisions but for ease or out of fear just do it anyway.

Any advice from people who have been in a similar situation or have legal knowledge is most welcome.

Thanks!

EDIT:

Thank you all for your input. I realise now that I am possibly the stupidest guy in England. However now it is too late to change my decision. And I accept that. So I will go to court and I will apologise and accept whatever the outcome may be. But at the very least I will stand there and speak for the many people in similar situations. Even if no one else ever hears it I will feel slightly better knowing that I’ve at least got to tell my story in person. There is more to the story and the circumstances which I won’t go into. And as I say it is very stupid but nevertheless it’s going to happen now either way 😂. Thanks again for all your frank and honest comments
