Contact a landlord to ask to let his room which is in a great location and incredibly reasonable rent. He sent a very simply reply saying "it's for female only". I've seen a LOT of female only ads and in some cases I understand this. An elderly woman offering a cheap place for a female carer for instance seems reasonable. In this case there's nothing like that. I sent screenshots of the conversation and his number, as well as the ad to the housing ombudsman of the local area but it's a 15 day wait until I'm due to receive a response. Is there anything else I can do?
This isn't the only property where this has happened. Normally they just write "FEMALE ONLY" on or within their ad and I realise I'm not welcome. These female only properties tend to be cheaper and better maintained and it's honestly making me feel as though I'm effectively being barred from affordable tenancies as they're almost always cheaper. It actually quite severely reduces the number of available properties to the point where I can't just ignore it.
Is there anything else I can do? I've read that this is legitimately classed as discrimination and just wanted confirmation I suppose. I'm at the point where I just feel like reporting every single case of this I come across.
