Debt collecter took more than agreed

My partner set up a payment plan with a debt collector about 8 months ago for £5 a month. Today they took around £200 without contacting us about it.
We are working with the bank to get that money back, but I'm wondering if when we get the money back we should just leave it, or if there is something we can do to prevent this happening again.
