I regularly perform classical music with an ensemble. We always ensure we buy or hire sufficient copies of the sheet music to perform from, however we have consistently run into an issue where we lose copies due to ensemble members losing them which ends up incurring significant replacement fees.
Is it illegal for me to scan one of the copies and distribute the digital version to ensemble members for the purpose of practice, reserving the physical copies for rehearsal and performance? It feels like it should fall under some fair use copyright term?
