Hi everyone, looking for some clarity on possible legal hitches with any of the following:
My partner and I currently have a house under offer, mortgage and everything should be fine and we have the completion day set as early August.
Now the part I’m not sure of. I am currently a tenant in a council house which has been in the family for decades (I inherited tenancy from my grandmother) and as such there is a great deal of sentimentality from the family.
After a lot of discussion and arguments I have agreed to exchange homes with my cousin so they get the “family” home before I terminate my tenancy after signing the new agreement within their current address.
Now, the council needs 28 days advance notice of termination OR they charge 4 weeks rent from the date you hand in the keys.
Ideally I would like to be off the councils books before mortgage payments start hence taking the hit with paying the 28 days upfront.
My question is if there would be any legal hitches to signing a new tenancy agreement then terminating that tenancy immediately?
Thanks for any help!
