Hoping someone knowledgeable about the vegetable tanning process can help. I have a few of the mid tier hides from tandy that are supposed full veg tanned. However, I have noticed that the mid tier hides tend to be stretchy, rubbery and have a strange texture. Almost identical to a belly skin.

However,it is the entire hide. Does anyone know why this is? Is it a retained hide sold as 100%veg tanned or just a bad tanning process? I have multiple examples purchased over a couple of years so it isn't just a bad batch. Tandy employees could not answer even basic questions about the tannage. Hoping someone here might know.

The tight, high quality, firm veg tan of the better known tanneries is because they a) use better quality tannin extracts hides (and bean house work) and b) tan and agitate the hides for longer.

These low quality hides come out of places like Brazil and India, and are thinned before tanning to rapidly reduce the tanning time more aggressive agitation. Thus theyโ€™re more hollow feeling.
