Inlay tips?

Post Body
First attempt at an inlay with a knife sheath for my uncle. Using ~7oz veg tan, I cut out a lip to insert the ray skin and managed to stitch it down. Not too happy with how the stitching turned out but at this point I’m just glad I didn’t ruin/waste material in the process. Does anyone have advice for how to work inlays? I’ve seen where people have used 2 pieces of leather with one being a backing and the other an overlay, but I was hoping to use a single piece
