Why is 家 sometimes used as a Kanji for people/jobs?

Post Body

When I first came across 作家 (さっか = author) I didn't think much of it, as I thought it makes sense: An author constructs/creates sth. at home. But then I noticed 家 is used for multiple jobs/persons like 大家 (おおや = landlord) or even 登山家 (とざんか = mountain climber), which has nothing to do with being at home/having houses.

Interestingly enough, there are alternative versions that use the person Kanji 者 at the end, which makes a lot more sense. Here 作者 (さくしゃ) or 登山者 for example.

Why is 家 used for people/jobs and how does it differ from the words using 者? Thanks in advance!
