How to communicate to partners and paralegals that I will be working remotely from an opposite coast for a while?

Post Body

For reference, I work for a very niche tax, and trusts and estate planning practice. The firm is currently undergoing a reorg to split the practice along specialties. I’m part of the group leaving to start the new venture. I joined this firm <3 months ago in a very relaxed part time role.

The incoming workflow has been slow, but I feel like I’ve developed good working relationships with my team members and I am excited about my future with the firm. Last Friday, I was told the firm wants to bring me on in a full time capacity albeit with a very modest salary.

I was in the process of planning a long vacation (3 weeks) when news of a potential full time offer arose. I haven’t received the offer letter yet, but I went ahead and booked my vacation for late April through mid May. I intend it to be a working vacation as I have built a lot of downtime into the itinerary and I will be fully accessible by phone and email.

Questions:

Am I an asshole for taking a vacation at such a pivotal moment for the firm? They’re trying to get the firm off the ground and I am fucking off to the PNW to see the rare Tibetan blue poppy in bloom.

How can I best communicate that I AM taking this vacation, regardless of their thoughts or feelings on the matter, while still communicating that I am willing to be flexible and accessible to the firm’s needs during this time?

Any tips for working from the opposite coast with a considerable time change?
