How to have conversation with client about truthfulness.

Post Body

Baby lawyer here. Every day I learn new lessons. Spoiler Alert: often the hard way. (I’ll let you know when I learn how to learn the easy way.)

One of the lessons I’ve learned recently is how often my clients lie to me. It’s happened several times now.

I think it’s partly because of the stereotypes around lawyers, but also because people don’t understand what we do.

How do I gracefully have that conversation with my client that I need the truth from them? I especially need help with this at the client acquisition stage because I have to bring new clients into the firm and I’m trying to strike that balance where it doesn’t just come across as me yelling “Don’t lie to me!”

I tell them that I can't do a good job for them unless they tell me the truth.

This is exactly what I say. I don't try cases, but if I did, I'd add that I don't want to hear something for the first time when they are in a deposition, or worse, a witness chair.

Even more fun!
