Statement on moderation
Post Body

Due to recent events in this subreddit, it has become clear that we need a moderation policy.

Guidelines:

  • Keep posts on-topic. If it doesn't have something to do with Lawrence (can be tangential, but there has to be some relation), it doesn't belong here.

  • No blatent self-promotion. If it reads like a flyer you found on Mass St. it will be removed. Edit: If you have an event going on that would be of interest, feel free to post it. 'Game night at Conroy's' is ok, but '$1 drafts at <bar>' is not. Just ask the questions 'is it interesting?' and 'is there more to it than just hawking wares?'. Subjective, yes, but that's what we'll go with for now. Also, if it's a repeating event, maybe wait a few weeks before you post about it again. We do want /r/Lawrence to be a source of interesting things to do... just be considerate.

  • No classifieds. lawrence.craigslist.org already exists for this, and does a much better job at this than reddit ever could, because it was designed for that purpose. /r/Lawrence is meant to be a place for discussion and original content; that is the niche that we can uniquely fill. To clarify: discussion of experiences at a particular housing complex: perfectly ok. Ads for tenants, roommates, etc: not ok.

  • No doxing (revealing the personal details of a poster) or post bombing (flooding the front page with identical or repetitive posts). These should really go without saying, but there you go.

  • No trolling. This will be interpreted quite generously, as I am a strong proponent of free speech, but thanks to LarryvilleCableGuy from this point forward blatent trolling will be warned, then, upon repeated offenses, banned. Trolling is difficult to define, but I'll take a stab at it: a pattern of comments that are consistently unconstructive and egregiously disruptive to the conversation. I'm avoiding the word offensive; I don't think there is a right not to be offended. Feel free to get as offensive and controversial as you like. However, in order to create a space conducive to conversation, there has to be SOME baseline of basic respect. If you're hanging out at a bar trying to have a conversation and there's some guy screaming abuse incoherently in your ear for hours on end, that guy will be removed. As he should be.

  • No shitposts. If you submit something like "Lawrence is such a stupid town. LOLLLLLLz" it will be removed. Again, every attempt will be made to permit free contribution of news and views, but there is a line. Edit: This item is more in regards to /r/Lawrence frontpage posts than comments.

Discuss.

When I first discovered this sub, I was really excited. This could be a great community for local redditors. When I saw the troll(s), I was disappointed. Now I'm hopeful. Good luck, Mr. Mod.

To the contributors, please see this as an opportunity to make our little spot on Reddit something with value.
