Hey all - need some information on the Rhode Island Public Defender. Please note that I also posted on LSL.
I'm a 2L law student who is looking to spend Summer 2019 at the RI PD as a Rule 9. I will be interning at a Massachusetts CPCS office this upcoming spring. I'm looking to either get a job offer or to spend time at an employer who will likely make me an offer.
My law school's career development office has told me the following:
- The RI PD hires on a "one out, one in" basis, therefore they don't hire in a predictable manner
- The RI PD only begins accepting internship applications for the summer once the Mass Consortium of Law Schools forum is done (The RI PD has OCI in January for my law school)
- The RI PD does not consistently hire former interns
- Everything that the RI PD does not do, Massachusetts CPCS offices do (hiring by law student class, hire former interns, accept applications earlier)
Career development therefore recommends holding off on applying to summer internships until I've gotten comfortable with my spring internship and have the "can I stay for the summer?" conversation, which presumably would be late January, early February.
My question is, does Career Development's information on the RI PD hold water? Should I wait until I'm comfortable with my spring job before I start applying for summer positions? I want to apply to the RI PD and two CPCS offices (spring office and another one or maybe two).
Thanks in advance!
