Hi all,
I interned at a mid-sized firm and was no-offered. When I joined this firm, my work email already had a deluge of assignments to get started on, and I did not have much guidance regarding expectations, deliverables, or dates. I ended up figuring it out and turning out what I believed to be good work product. I received constructive feedback twice but otherwise received no feedback or positive feedback. The partners/ associates would grab me for court or lunch often.
On the last day of the internship, I asked for any parting feedback/ advice from all of the attorneys. All of them had neutral or positive things to say, with some saying they would be excited if I returned.
I was happy with this. They said I did quality work and hiring full time is different than rehiring a short term intern.
A few months later, they posted on my school's career board. I reached out to one of the partners, with whom I had become friendly (been to their house, hung out and such), and expressed my interest in the position and how I missed the firm. They then told me that I was not a good fit for them or them for me, but that they wish me the best of luck in my legal career.
I did not pry further as its like asking an ex why you were not good enough.
All three of my internships before or since this would recommend me to future employers. A public defender, four attorneys from a small firm, and two more attorneys from a state agency. I will most likely be employed post graduation with the state agency.
I mainly just wanted to vent, and perhaps get some advice if you have any.
If you have any questions, ask away. I will not be providing any identifying information for myself or the firm. I had a good time there and learned a lot, it was still a great internship. The breakup just stung because it felt a bit dishonest and was a surprise.
