I was hired by my very small firm in 2022 as a legal assistant with the understanding that the position would evolve into something much more substantial over time. At my one year review we discussed taking on additional responsibilities and I asked for and was given a significant raise (from $20/hr to $50k salaried). Fast forward 6 months and I asked for a title change to "Office Administrator" which was approved. The partners and I have a meeting in two weeks to discuss the new role.
Currently I work 40 hours a week at the law office and then another 20 waiting tables. Three times a week I do 15 hour days between the two jobs often work 7 days a week. I hate it. I would rather invest all my time and effort into growing the law firm and feel like this office administrator position is a great way to show what kind of value I can provide the firm.
Over the past month or so I've developed a detailed growth strategy that I'm going to present at our meeting that specifically focuses on client retention, relationship management, and marketing that addresses everything from implementing a CRM, to a detailed strategy for content marketing/ SEO and leveraging social media more efficiently, email marketing, plans for networking within the community and other firms to generate referrals, defining and tracking KPIs and more- all of which I would be in charge of.
Essentially, I would like to 1. help them achieve their goals for growing the firm into a business that they can scale and eventually sell, allowing them to focus less on production and more on actual business strategy (or golf, or whatever the hell they would rather spend their time on), and 2. handle everything in the firm that is not actually practicing law, allowing all the attorneys to reach their maximum billable hours.
I have three questions:
- What is the most easily-digestible way to present all of this information? I created a thorough breakdown of each element of my new role on Notion but its kind of a lot, and I'm not sure how easy it will be to go through each subpage in a 1/2 hour presentation.
- How do I convince them to give me more money so soon after such a large raise? I am confident that with all of my new responsibilities and the value I'll bring to the firm I'll be worth every penny of the $75k I want but feel like its going to be a shock to them that Im asking for so much more so soon. What would be your method for negotiating this salary? I would also like my own office and significantly more PTO (the firm doesnt offer any benefits).
- Does all of this sound totally coo-coo-bananas and am I going to get laughed out of this meeting? I realize how ambitious I am being, but am extremely revenue-oriented and driven to achieve both my personal financial goals and the firms. I want to become an integral part in helping the partners make as much money as possible and be able to retire whenever they're ready.
I've invested a lot of time in learning about all the different elements that go into growing a law firm and have a background in content marketing and office management. Im confident I can succeed. I just need help with the best way to present my pitch and convince the partners to give me the opportunity to prove it to them.
