Wanted to remind everyone here that biglaw is not the only career option as a lawyer, and in some cases, isn’t even the most profitable option(I know right?)
I did biglaw at a fancy firm for my summers and articling before deciding I hated it and moving to a family law firm.
Not only was my income similar(100k vs 110k at the time, my billable target was around 50% less (1300 vs 1850). Actually, if I billed as much as I did at the corporate law firm when I worked in family law I would have came out ahead as I got 25% of all billables past 1300.
Now you may be thinking that 20 years down the line the income gap would be insurmountable, but the amount of senior lawyers I knew clearing high 6 figures or low 7 figures at firms you’ve never heard of is staggering.
Also, I guess I should mention that I was much happier at my family law firm compared to biglaw.
Anyways, that’s the end of my ramble. Just wanted to ease some of the pressure that you law students may be feeling!
