New player, I don't understand the weapon modification thing.

I tried to modifiy one of the most basic weapons so that maybe I can do better and not die as often. I completed the mod but was surprised to see that the one in my inventory didn't actually change to the mod I just supposedly made. After I completed the mod, a "buy" button became active but when I tap it, it just switches to a screen where I can buy more blueprints. I just want to know how to get the upgraded weapon I just made. I then tapped the button to make a new one and it still seems to be the unmodified version. What the hell am I missing?
