Easiest way to get rid of grass without harming soil?
Post Body

My mom has been wanting some large planter boxes in our backyard. Since my parents are elderly, I'm the one who has to clear away grass in order to accomplish this, but unfortunately I'm non-athletic, have a short attention span, and don't do too well in the Texas heat, so I'd prefer something that doesn't involve lots of shoveling. Obviously we want the ground underneath to still be usable, so we can't just put something heavy on top and let it all die.

Any ideas?
