I have worked in the New York City landscape industry since 1996. Until 2002, I managed the landscape division of a medium sized firm whose projects ranged from small residential installations to moderately large building development projects. I was responsible for hiring, logistics, purchasing, planning and on-site coordination and management. I was a lead by doing type of manager.
In 2001, our irrigation subcontractor offer to sell me his business and, realizing that my boss wasn’t interested in giving me more autonomy nor a growth role in the company, I accepted his offer and became a small business owner.
The first couple of years had a steep learning curve as I had no experience with irrigation nor business management. But I persevered and had a thriving business in no time. My sales grew year after year with the exception of 2009-2011 during the Great Recession and more currently Covid. But the recent contraction is more due to being burnt out and lonely. I had to let my staff go during the prolonged city lockdown and serviced all my clients myself for two years.
I think I’m done being my own boss and miss working as part of a professional group where I can focus and develop my skills rather than wearing all the hats. Also sick of chasing payment and commuting for five hours a day, both of which have taken a greater and greater toll on my mental health.
If I had to list my strengths, I would say that sales and customer relations are at the top. Because of my experience working on high end projects for both wealthy homeowners and large property developers, I have a toolbox of design understanding both on the aesthetic and practical sides. I know how to speak with and manage expectations of a clientele that is rarely in the mood to compromise their desires.
I’ve also coordinated with all the trades involved with executing successful projects of all sizes. I’ve also been contracted and worked with some large LA firms.
So my question stands. Is there a roll for someone with my skills and experience in a high end LA or design/build firm? What kind of salaries or growth opportunities can I expect?
I appreciate any advice or input offered.
