I just recently moved into a rental in California (San Diego County).
The front door has a deadbolt (keypad entry type) but does not have a doorknob installed. The result is that the front door does not remain closed unless it is locked. Additionally, it is just difficult to pull the door closed with just the deadbolt.
I requested from our landlord that he install a doorknob and he replied that "it is functional". Now, I agree that it is functional. It is a front door that opens, closes, and locks. But most normal front doors have a doorknob and remains closed without having to lock it. So, my argument with him is that it does not function normally.
We finally begrudgingly compromised where I will purchase the doorknob and he will pay for installation (it took a lot of negotiation to get to that point), but I still think I shouldn't have to pay for anything.
What are your thoughts? Am I out of line in fighting with him on this?
