New to LARP

This year, I am determined to do things I've always been interested but have been too scared to try....
Next on the list is LARP, so how do I get into it? Ideally probably something fantasy or historical based. Someone said to start with a small session, couple hours max to see if its something you like. From scrolling, it seems like there's no clear way to find groups in the US, but there's got to be some way to find some awesome folks willing to take on a newbie?
