Never LARPed before, but hoping to get involved

Hey, as the title states, I have never actually taken part in a LARP before but definitely wish to get involved in the hobby. How did people actually start to get involved? Did you attend local LARP events or put your own together? The only events I know of are Empire LARP (Which seems great) and Old Town (in Poland). What does one need to get involved as a starting point just to test if I actually enjoy it? Preferably something in the UK if you are recommending country specific LARP events.
