LAX to USC
Post Body

I flew in to LAX on Sunday to get back to USC after Spring Break and was met with complete gridlock in the Loop. All the buses that I was going to take were all blocked up including the Metro Connector, and there were even fewer buses running in the first place because of the LA Marathon. I then made the extremely poor decision of walking all the way to Westchester/Veterans from T2 and taking the K and E Lines from there. I didn't really mind the 1 hour walk because I was sitting on my flight for a while but I obviously don't want to do that again. There were some buses that I could have taken (ex. 102, 115), but I punched the numbers in Google Maps and apparently it was faster to walk to the K Line than to wait 15 minutes for the bus when it would only go for 3 or so stops.

Any tips for a better route next time? Obviously the APM is the best solution but that won't be done until next year. I would also like to apologize in advance for not knowing certain things about the system here as I've only been here for a few months.

Ah I guess if I called an Uber from out of the airport to get to the K Line station it wouldn't be that expensive. Smart. But it's still so annoying that we have to wait for ANOTHER YEAR to get the APM :/

Well that was the other issue haha. Transit said it was 6 minutes until the 102 got to 96th/Sepulveda, then when the 6 minutes rolled around it suddenly changed to 56. In hindsight it was probably some bug due to all the loop traffic, but that was the other reason why I walked.

Yeah this was actually my original plan to get back, but I waited at 96th/Sepulveda for about 20 minutes for that bus before I made the choice to walk. Probably should have added that in original post. Thanks anyway though.

Thanks for that article, that might have been it. I arrived at 12 noon and I started walking due north out of T2 at maybe 12:30 and I was able to see all the Sky Way walkers. I guess Sunday was just horrendous due to typical Sunday traffic at any airport amplified by the marathon road work. Hopefully this doesn't become a regular occurrence though.

Fully agree, I'm a Bay Area native and BART is super useful for regional travel the SkyTrain is very good. I do wish there was a line going up the Peninsula from the San Jose/Santa Clara area to Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, etc. but for now the system is more than good enough. Especially when you compare BART to the intercity rail system here in LA

This probably depends on the J Line traffic by Harbor Gateway/San Pedro though, as well as in downtown itself depending on where you're going. I would imagine that the E Line headways are more consistent than the variability that mixed flow bus can have sometimes.

Hmm interesting. I guess I should follow that account then lol. But I think even if I was able to book a shuttle it would still get caught up in the loop traffic anyway, so probably not much of an improvement on travel time. It would definitely be much easier than walking for an hour though.

I got a link to sign up for a shuttle going to LAX (didn't fit my flight time out which is why I didn't use it) but not one for the way back, unless it got lost in my inbox or something. Was there a link I was supposed to find on USG's page or something?

Okay I didn't know about this actually - this is the Metro rideshare service right? I know there's an app but how exactly does it work? Is it the kind of thing where you can get picked up from anywhere dropped off anywhere within the zone, or are there specific pickup/dropoff points?

That's another good option that I didn't think about in the moment, but the FlyAway shuttles were getting blocked up as well. I think that I still would have had to wait a ridiculous amount of time in the Loop if I used FlyAway. I also think there's an out of pocket fare I would have had to pay which obviously isn't ideal.

Yeah I was considering that because that's the way I got to LAX on the way out and that was fine, even with the long-ish walk from 37th/USC back to where I live near USC Village (so by Jefferson/McClintock). But the first Metro Connector shuttle that I saw while walking out was still at the LAX Pylons, so it still would have taken quite a while for me to get to the C Line station either way if I waited. The route that the shuttle runs is via Century and Aviation - this was the way that the shuttle went on my way out from USC. But these were both almost gridlocked themselves per Google Maps which would have caused a huge delay, and this is not even mentioning the extra time it would take for the shuttle to get out of the loop.

Also I would imagine that the walk from LAX to Aviation/LAX is also going to be about an hour so not too much of an improvement there.

Ah I forgot about Caltrain somehow. I've never actually used it (I've only ever used BART and Amtrak Capitol Corridor) which is probably why it slipped my mind. Heh.

The electrification thing is great for sure and hopefully all of the Metrolink/Amtrak lines around SoCal can get some of that too. I don't know if it'll be in SCORE or anything relatively soon, but it would be nice to have the whole system electrified by the time CAHSR is a thing for example.

Yeah I know a bit about the APM. You guys in this subreddit probably know about nandert numble and I've been on their accounts since before I came down here to LA - I really wish that the Bay Area also had some dedicated transit accounts to follow. I think it was ITF West that had the economy garage shuttle bus stations and ITF East with the Metro connector private drop-off and pick-up. It's even better for me as a USC student because I can use the E and K Lines to get to LAX and back without having to bus or walk much, whereas someone at UCLA or some other school would have to take at least one bus.

I do agree that the induced demand stuff will mean that the loop still has traffic, but at least you have the *option* to do so rather than the *requirement.* Also I would be surprised if there was still complete gridlock after the APM. In any case the traffic thing won't be a big issue for me specifically as I will be taking rail anyway, so the airport connector station is what's really important for me with regards to the APM.
