I salute you, Gamergate. As the mainstream media narrative spirals ever outward, I cannot help but step back and appreciate the humble beginnings of this grassroots consumer revolt. By no means is political correctness new, nor was this the first time journalism experienced corruption, but of all people it was my fellow gamers who had the bomb bags to stand up, unite, challenge the establishment, and contest the authoritarian agenda of their political demagogues in the spirit of transparency, freedom of speech, and equality of opportunity. What should be social justice.
I know many of you are world weary from defending gaming in it's infancy from the social conservatives of decades past, and I know the rest bear the burden that comes with simply being raised to be tech savvy in the new age of internet where social networking has displaced legacy media and the free marketplace of ideas is now more open than ever to crowdsourcing, remixing, and international competition. It's more difficult than ever to remain ignorant with so much information at your fingertips, and so it is with the same skeptical eye that we turned towards the now-dying medium of television that we look upon this creature called "dogma" and dare to question it. Is this the narrative of truth or is this the crude mimickry of that which stands accused?
Though I surely hold political views most would find divisive, and further still would I burn bridges were I to elucidate on the sort of games I hate, it is on the merits described above that I respect Gamergate regardless of how each of you individually tip these scales. You were the first into the breach, laying down your internet anonymity and taking up arms against censorship, corporate propaganda, and identity politics. Under-stated and under-equipped, you inexplicably survived to be the oldest veterans in The First Great Meme War. Your accomplishments ring far and wide across the internet and your story will be told to our childrens' children, likened to the Battle of Thermopylae, a harrowing struggle over the sovereignty of a free digital landscape. So whether you are hardcore or casual, brony or weeb, gamer girl or trap, I salute you, Gamergate and NotYourShield, for being massive fucking shitlords.
