Hekiganroku, case 48: Making Tea at Sh么kei Temple
Post Body

Case:

Imperial Minister 脭 entered Sh么kei Temple and tea was prepared. At that time the Senior Monk R么 picked up the tea-kettle for My么sh么. R么 turned over the tea kettle. The Imperial Minister saw it and asked the senior monk, "What is under the tea stove?" R么 said, "The stove-supporting deities." The Imperial Minister said, "If they are the stove-supporting deities, why did you turn over the tea kettle?" R么 said, "One serves at one鈥檚 post for a thousand days and loses it one morning." The Imperial Minister made a flourish with his sleeves and left. My么sh么 said, "Senior Monk R么, you eat the food of Sh么kei Temple and then go beyond the river to beat on charred wood." R么 said, "How is it for you, Master?" My么sh么 said, "Those who are not humans have gained the advantage." (Setch么 said, "At that time I would have just turned over the tea stove.")

Verse:

The question which comes seems to make a sound.

The answering activity is neither good nor skillful.

How pitiful! The one-eyed dragon

Did not show his fangs and claws.

The fangs and claws open, creating clouds and thunder.

How many times have I passed through waves reversing the river waters?
