Best use of old armors?

I jumped back into the game yesterday after a roughly 4 year hiatus. I've already got new sets of armor for all my knights, but what is the best use of the old armors? I have quite a few DF and 5* armors. Are they worth trying to fuse, or are they just really shiny enhancement material?
I did a search before asking and didn't quite see a post on this, but please forgive me if there is.
