I would like to get y’alls opinion on a situation that happened to me last night.
I’m gluten intolerant and my husband has an onion allergy. When we need a quick bite we often referred to chains As they usually have all their Allergan and nutrition information available online. So we go to Olive Garden where we have eaten loads of times before and I never get sick. I order when I order every time, Salad no onions no croutons, gluten-free rotini with meat sauce and Italian sausage. My husband ordered the exact same thing. We find it’s easier if we both order gluten-free. It takes a while because apparently they’re running a little bit short on sausage and I after informing our server that I was medically gluten-free when I ordered, she was making sure that everyone change their gloves /clean tools etc. She was great. We didn’t mind the wait.
Pasta arrives and it looks delicious. I take one bite of rotini and see a long piece of spaghetti in my pasta. I literally freeze in fear. If I consume gluten I get a violently ill for several days. It will take weeks for my intestines to heal back.
We get The servers attention and she is in shock as she had done everything correctly to let them know I had an allergy. We are quiet, polite but honestly both of look like our dog died out of fear of my GI reaction. She goes to the back manager comes out brings us are fresh meal, of course by the time I’m sick to my stomach from worry. Manager and Server both apologized several times, comp our meal and say they are investigating.
I gave the server $20 In cash as a tip because it was clear she had done her best. We probably won’t return for a while just til I can shake off that fear.
Other GF folks think I should have raised hell until I got a gift card and not tipped. I think they are assholes. Others think I over tipped.
Thoughts ? Edit: a great many of you (please stop the PMs) believe that folks with celiac or other allergies should never eat at a restaurant.
