Personally i think Kvothe realized they were the moment Chronicler told him his name. While there is no direct evidence of this, with how intelligent Kvothe is, what he learned in the 2nd book about the lackless family and the implications of what he will almost certainly learn in the 3rd book about his mothers past. I would be a bit shocked if he hadnt already realized it.
On top of that
After hearing chroniclers name he decides to share his story with him. Maybe because of chroniclers prestige sure, but maybe because he knows by the end of it Chronicler will realize they are family creating a much more solid foundation of trust than
"no i wont tell anyone, i promise."
They also seem to have more than a little bit of banter, which could just be becuase of the intimacy they've shared in Kvothe trusting this story to him, but maybe its because of the vague connection he feels to him. Considering he lost his family at a young age and so far in his story the closest thing to family hes found is Sim, Will and Auri. And maybe a little bit with tempi aswell.
While its definitely possible Kvothe has realized this, the idea that chronicler has aswell is what im really curious about. The idea that these two men realize theyre related but are waiting for the right time to tell one another during this 3 day story time session is hilariously absurd and exactly the kind of shit ive come to expect from Rothfuss.
Chronicler is an extremely intelligent person.
He has been actively hunting down information on kvothe
He almost certainly knew of his own families lineage already, being the son of a duke.
He went thru a LOT of effort to hunt Kvothe down and when meeting this man who is wanted for killing a king, who has countless stories about how dangerous he is, he shows almost no fear towards him.
Ill grant you chronicler does have a heavy pair.
But think about the comparison between how he is with Bast, and how he is with kvothe.
Kvothe being the tremendously more dangerous of the two by all accounts.
Chronicler may not be pissing his pants scared of Bast, but he is definitely scared of him.
Kvothe on the other hand, he has an extremely familiar relationship with after hours of meeting him. He attempts to manipulate him, goad him, even yells at him when he thinks Kvothe has shared his story with someone else.
The closest he came to something like that with Bast was when he called him an ass for acting like a skinwalker and scaring the piss out of him.
It just seems like chronicler has more reason to trust Kvothe, and want to get to know him, than just because he wants to write his story. But that could just be speculative rabbit holing.
I do want to mention what marvelous story telling structure it was to mention Chroniclers name, once, At the very beginning of the first book.
And then to explain the Lackless family history almost as a side note near the end of the 2nd.
Leaving the implications of Kvothes mother being a lackless to become to primary focus of the readers speculation, and the fact the chronicler already stated he was related to the same line, to fall almost entirely unnoticed.
So yeah thats the rabbit hole i went down today, what are yalls thoughts
I'm not sure Kvothe knows his heritage. As of right now I don't see much showing that he has pieced that together yet.
Personally I think he will find out in book 3.
