I work in the HVAC field as an installer. I install air conditioning systems and furnaces in people’s homes. That piece is called plenum. Air from the motor of the furnace gets pushed in there. Those holes are where I attach the ducts that then run throughout the attic and attach to cans in the attic to give airflow
