So, call me a prude, but for a long time, I refused to watch kill la kill. Ive always hated fanservice, and from the little bit I saw, it was fanservice the anime. So I had no interest. But then my friend finally convinced me to watch it, and IM SO GLAD I DID.
Heres the thing, sure there is a ton of fanservice in Kill La Kill, but it does 3 things that no other fanservice does.
- The girls realize how scantily dressed they are.
- Its actually EXPLAINED AND IS ESSENTIAL TO THE PLOT.
- It wasnt the focus.
And besides the fanservice deconstruction aspect, kill la kill had 3 things that I think made it amazing.
The OST, I can listen to Blumenkranz nonstop. So good.
The animation, amazing animation, some of the most badass stuff ive seen.
Finally, the cheesiness. Kill la kill realizes its cheesy, and takes it to the utmost extreme, and owns it completely.
I can honestly say that Kill la Kill is in my top 5 anime, and its taught me not to judge a "book by its cover".
BTW: for reference, my top 5 anime
- Psycho Pass
- Kill la Kill
- Steins Gate
- Madoka Magica
- Code Geass
Edit: um reverse this list, for some reason reddit flips it...
Im also currently watching Gurren Lagann, but I cant really have an opinion on it yet.
