My husband, 2 dogs, and cat just did a road trip from Seattle to Arkansas, Missouri, and back, putting a little over 7k on the car. Wanted to share my tips for you long haulers. We have a 22' Wind AWD.
You need to plan it out for sure. Plug Share is a lifesaver as it gives excellent insight into locations and charger status/reliability. Ensure you have the DC fast charger set as a destination in your Kia GPS and it will pre-condition the battery. It also would always add miles to our range once the address was inputted which was quite helpful for the tight moments. There were times we found that the EA chargers had crap reviews, and found a close ChargePoint.
I planned out charging manually and mapped out each charging point for my own sake, but I have not tried the route planner with the new update. I used the Kia app to find the chargers and then send them to my car which enables the battery pre-conditioning. You can find them via the car too, but it is more cumbersome. The Kia nav isn't updated as fast as they are building chargers, so some new locations weren't there.
We used Electrify America and Chargepoint. Chargepoint was more reliable and consistent with charging speeds, but EA has more locations and typically has faster 350kw chargers. Plugshare helps with this. It was annoying when cars that couldn't handle the 350kw, were plugged into them and some just didn't understand.
The car hates cold, mountains, strong winds, and Kansas (jk, it doesn't like high temps). Drive in eco, go the speed limit, and use cruise control for maximum energy regen. While you can try to pedal it, the car is much better at using energy and able to regen more efficiently with the computer in control. We averaged about 220 miles per full charge and averaged about 2.3-2.6 kw/mile. For sure some range anxiety at times, HOWEVER, the car is incredibly accurate with its range calculations, so drive nice and trust the car. We found no difference going 70 than 75, so averaged 75mph with some 100 mile stints at 80mph.
At our families' houses, we trickle charged on a 110 and it seemed to be somewhat happier not having to fast charge all the time.
After a month after being back with the normal city and area hwy driving, we are back up to 3.8 kw/mile and 290 on a full charge.
