Extra Credits posted another video that talks about gender. Personally, I found it to be nonsensical and baseless... had to rant a bit about it.
The following is a brief message I sent to them:
You're missing a lot here. But mostly reality.
It's neither a problem nor a stereotype. People attribute shooters and combat heavy games to males because the consumer base literally is mostly males. And puzzle games are mostly attributed to females because that consumer base literally is mostly females.
Let's take your examples; Portal appeals to a lot of females because it is non-combative and puzzle-centric. Puzzle Quest appeals to a lot of males because it is combat heavy. Both are terrible examples for the weak point you are trying to make because they fit RIGHT INTO the preferred genres of each gender (combat for male and puzzle for female).
It has nothing to do with sexism (as you heavily allude to) or stereotypes.
It has everything to do with the reality that different genders enjoy different things and companies know how to market to that appeal.
What are your thoughts?
