Subassemblies make my game lag to unplayableness

Edit: solved.
Hello. I bought and installed today KSP from steam with both DLC. The game runs okay on my Linux laptop, until I try to use a subassembly, then the game churns to about 1 frame per second and I cannot place the subassembly. Exiting the VAB fixes the problem.
I have used KSP in the past, but not on Linux.
Google did not help.
Is this a known issue? Should I just play the game without subassemblies? Needless to say, I'm not thrilled about that.
