Stuck with low money on Career mode. Any tips?

Hey all. I played a bit about a year ago, but then stopped and waited for release.
I started a career mode on moderate difficulty (but removed the ability to quicksave or revert)
I seem to totally unable to make money. All of the contracts give me something like 9,000 tops right now, but they are for things like testing some part on an escape trajectory.
I can barely get to orbit with the 30 part limit and the really low weight limit for the launch pad.
How do you get enough money to upgrade the buildings?
