BLUEPRINT to SAVE NET NEUTRALITY
Post Body

So, I was making this distributed movement and I created this sidebar of great information how of we can save net neutrality on December 14.

Basically, #mala is a distributed movement that you can join in the fight for the net neutrality. I am saying this now because most of the blueprint is written with that context in mind.

For more information, you can go here:

Nevertheless, you can still use this blueprint as a way to save net neutrality and that this message is better out in the open.

With that said, here is the blueprint.

What is MALA?

MALA ("Mobilize and Leverage Action") is a open, free, (but concrete) movement that acts as an "online emergency alarm system" whenever your digital rights (or the infrastructure) is coming under attack so we can mobilize and come up with a plan of action quickly without getting staggered.

This subreddit and the movement itself is dedicated to be the Emergency Alert System that anyone can join whenever the Internet (rights or the infrastructure) is coming under attack.

Anyone can join to make #mala by making content about a free and open Internet, make applications on #mala to help the everyday person do a small part in keeping the Internet free and open, creating social media groups, etc.

The only line that we draw in the sand is that it has to be about making and safekeeping an open and free Internet for all. That is our main principle.

What Does MALA Do?

MALA contacts startup founders, popular content creators, popular networks in order to sound the alarm and mobilize their audience to defend the Internet freedoms when neccessary.

MALA also produces content and up-to-date information on what is currently going with Internet freedom in respective to one's country.

MALA is also a community that develops applications for the public to use to defend their Internet freedom when need be.

However, MALA isn't an organization. It's a PROACTIVE representative leaderless movement. This movement includes you and you have to do your part to make MALA work.

OUR PRINCIPLES:

  • 1. First and foremost, this is bipartisan. We are not Democrats or Republicans. We are Internet citizens coming here to fight, save, and preserve a free and open Internet for all. (No spamming political-based points because this isn't the place for it.)

  • 2. Anyone can join #mala and anyone can get kicked out, too (#mala is a leaderless movement with infrastructure in place to make sure that this movement doesn't get corrupted. Priority #1 is that you help keep free and open Internet. No reclaiming the Internet movements because there's some fringe side that is saying bad things.)

  • 3. Contribute and be useful *(Again, you contribute to #mala (and the free and open Internet in general) by making videos, creating easy-to-use, open-source software applications, making memes that spread, making video games about having a free and open Internet. This is incredibly important to know that you have talents that you can use to save and keep the Internet open and free.)

  • 4. You are just one person. Just focus on doing your part. (Saving the Internet is a tall order. It's important to remember that you are just one person. All you can do is to use your talents (you could be funny, artistic, great at programming, a great marketing and sales person, have an understanding of basic human psychology, physically healthy, well-connected, or etc. You can also use your connections in order to save and keep the Internet open and free for all.)

  • 5. Stay on f*cking course: keeping the Internet free and open (You know why most leaderless movements fail. It's because they get corrupted, they lose steam, they lose focus and delve into nothingness.* Most leaderless movements are formed in times of crisis when we're under attack. #mala and the Internet won't always be under attack all the time. During peacetime, focus on building something that helps keep the Internet open and free for all.)*

  • 6. Keep the onlookers educated, excited, and engaged (People are busy with their own lives. Keeping the Internet open and free is difficult for one person. Whenever you are talking to someone, designing something (game, art, meme, application), you want to keep the user with the *3E's: entertained, excited, and engaged.** Saving and preserving a free and open Internet for all is (hard) work but it should be fun for the other guy.*)

Use calls-to-action that are actively simple: Call your Congressperson for 5 minutes to save the Internet. You want your CTA's for the user to leverage a small action to get a huge reward out of it for them.

  • 7. #mala stands for Mobilize and Leverage Action for a good reason. (Even though, we are just one person; together, we can keep the Internet a free and open place for all. The reason why this movement is different is because of focus and staying on course: we kick people out of #mala and keep going to the mission of preserving a free and open Internet. We can unite with each other to build something that gets people interested and engaged. You are not alone here in keeping the Internet free and open.)*

TL;DR: Our mission is to mobilize and leverage people's efforts, talents, connections, and creations to keep and preserve a free and open Internet for all.

OUR CURRENT MISSIONS (as of Decemeber 3, 2017)

  • 1. Educate the masses QUICKLY in a FUN way.

*(People are busy with their own lives. Keeping the Internet open and free is difficult for one person. Whenever you are talking to someone, designing something (game, art, meme, application),

You want to keep the user with the 3E's: entertained, excited, and engaged. Saving and preserving a free and open Internet for all is (hard) work but it should be fun for the other guy.)

Use LEVERAGE-ABLE calls-to-action that are actively simple: Call your Congressperson for 5 minutes to save the Internet. You want your CTA's for the user to leverage a SMALL ACTION to get a HUGE REWARD out of it for them.

  • 2. Contact your content creators, especially if you are INTERNATIONAL to get them to talk about net neutrality.

(Not everyone knows how very important the Internet is to their daily lives. The Internet is actually some people's livelihoods and The FCC's plan can jeopardize those people's livelihoods.

If you are INTERNATIONAL, contact any content creator who has a medium-sized audience (50,000 subscribers) or a large-sized audience ( 1 million subscribers). It's not just YouTubers, also contact podcasters, too.

Write a list of 10 content creators that you need to contact right away, once you've contacted 10 of them, take a breath, write another list of 10 content creators, and repeat

The more people you contact, the more leverage we have in reaching out to people. This needs to be so widespread that your grandmother knows about it.

  • 3. Create content and get your friends and family to make content about keeping the Internet free and open for all

(Good marketing is getting people to know what your message. Great marketing is getting people to spread your message. So far, the content creators have been making videos but this message needs to be more widespread.)

Make a short Facebook/YouTube/Instagram video (be it funny, informative, serious, straightforward, meme-cultured - using famous and TV shows in order to spread the message faster. (YES, using branded content can help a lot.) and spread it around social media.

Hashtagging #mala will allow the movement to grow and also staying focused on the main course.

The more the average person does it, the more widespread that net neutrality news can be.

  • 4. Converting Others to Contacting Their Reps

(People are being busy with their lives. People will say that they are going to call their Reps but they won't. That's why you goin

  • 5. Make it a party by talking to ecommerce/private label businesses

(People don't want to get stressed. Yes, net neutrality is incredibly important but saving the Internet is stressful. Asking someone to save the Internet is a hefty task that not many people can take upon themselves to do. You need to focus on making this fun, light-hearted, and cool.

We need to build comradery among each other and we need to get businesses involved in getting them involved, too.

Ask any YouTuber. Controversy skyrockets attention. Businesses can use the net neutrality controversy to let their audience know about net neutrality. A good example would be to have the customer talk about net neutrality (pro/or anti- position) with their respective Congressperson in an exchange for more items.

Businesses can get people featured in a video for talking about net neutrality. We can make it fun and light-hearted.

Businesses (big and small) hate:

  • unpredictable overhead

but they love:

  • attention,
  • brand engagement,
  • brand evangelization (people loving the brand and being loyal to it), and
  • and yes, sales.

Find a business that you shop at regularly (local or online) and invite them to talk about net neutrality.

  • 6. PRIMARILY Contacting your Senator and Congressperson

(This is what is going to make the difference. Don't waste your energy on a Change.org petition. Those are masturbatory at best. Every action needs to have a successful result at the end. This is the most important action that you need to take.)

EXAMPLES of MASTURBATORY ACTIONS: :(

  • Standing in solidarity (We don't need solidarity. We need action, even if it is small, action is more important than standing by and not doing anything.)
  • Getting people to sign Change.org petition (We don't need any Change.org petitions. A White House petition would be better instead of Change.org petition.)
  • Doing demonstrations without having an end goal in mind: converting people into calling their Representatives.
  • Not being educated about net neutrality and hoping that everything will turn out for the better.

EXAMPLES of GREAT ACTIONS: :)

  • Making it super-easy for the average person to be educated about net neutrality with their Congressperson and Senator.
  • Calling them yourself helps.
  • Focus on converting people from onlookers into calling their representative.
  • Leverage your connections with your talent to get people to contact their Congressperson and their Senators.

Focus on actions that are going to be decisive, precise, and straightforward.
