I've found myself with more money than time lately, so I've been trying out different instant kavas -- specifically, actual dehydrated instants, not micronized (so: more expensive, but also a cleaner experience). I figured I'd share my findings with folks who might be trying to find a good supplier (not in order of rank):
1) Fiji Vanua Kava -- This is my everyday go-to. It's technically a bit on the heavy side, but I find it well-balanced for daytime use (I prefer really heavy hitters for nighttime). They also have a really good CO2 extract (great if you're on the go)! This is the one I generally start friends on who are new to kava -- a well-rounded baseline.
2) Kava Society -- They have a blended 'instant green' plus five single cultivar options. The ones I've tried have all been heavy, and have been fine/good. I've read that their specialty is on the headier side, though, so for heady fans reading this: might want to check out their three headier single cultivar instants.
3) Nakamal at Home -- This stuff is like a punch to the face, but in a good way. Absolute couch locker. This one seems to lack subtlety, but I don't mind that if I'm just looking to unwind fast late in the evening.
4) Bula Kava House -- An evening go-to, solidly heavy. Alas they're out of stock right now. Nice and peppery taste for fans of Vanuatu kava (which I am), and also seems particularly fresh (smells/tastes that way to me, anyway).
5) Gourmet Hawaiian Kava - Extremely smooth in terms of taste and effect. You might need a slightly higher dose to get the same impact, but the Mahakea in particular is an excellent daytime option (Nene good for relaxing later). A lot of people are fans of the three cultivars that aren't in stock right now, which are among other things reviewed as being stronger, but no complaints here -- if you like smooth Hawaiian awa, this is the place for it.
All of the above have treated me well, so it's really about where you lean in terms of taste in heavy versus heady, nuanced versus powerful, etc. The price points vary a lot, too, which is something to consider. Depending on sales and exchange rates, Fiji Vanua and Kava Society (NZ) tend to be on the more affordable end. N@H is in the middle. And both GHK and BHK are on the more expensive side. No instant is exactly cheap, but it is damned convenient!
P.S. For micronized, I like Kalm With Kava's options, but frankly it's a bit hard on my stomach for regular use.
