Using Kava to get sober. Day 3. Heavy binge drinker for 20 years. Most recent bloodwork showed elevated bilirubin and alcohol. Gonna stop kava for now but anecdotally is this a good idea? Nothing has worked for me and I’m scared of the benzos I’ve been on. Talking to my doctor this week.

Gosh elevated bilirubin and Alkaloids! Not alcohol, title is wrong.

Have not combined benzos with Kava and it’s only day 3 but Noble Kava tea kills the alcohol craving in even very small amounts for me (like a 1/2 tablespoon of instant). I don’t want to go through benzo withdrawal so I’ll be resuming those so I don’t get withdrawals. I just happened to stumble on a Kava bar on a trip and it’s like a switch was flipped for me.

I’ve read a LOT of posts concerning sobriety and risks but anecdotally does anyone have advice who has been in similar situations? Diagnosed PTSD, GAD, depression and tired of benzos (which I generally take as directed or less) and this just seems like a no brainer. Also should I get blood work for liver done again at my primary care doctor before resuming Kava if my psych green lights tapering and usage? Any tips or thoughts? I’ve gathered NIH studies to show my psych the good and potential bad.

Edit: should also add, I binge drink around 1x a week to the point of blacking out, I do not take benzos when I drink. I’ve been on Klonopin .5 as needed, I might take as much as 1.5 a day, and 45mg of temezepam as needed for sleep, which is almost daily.

Edit 2: My timing was a little off but today is day 6 sober from alcohol, meeting with my psych next week to discuss tapering benzos. Thank you to this community for the advice, personal stories, and DMs, I feel so lucky to have found this community and culture!
