Upgrade Split Up Party

Traveling LCY-AMS. My partner is diamond with delta and I’m platinum. We’re traveling on the same pnr. They split us up and upgraded him alone to business and the didn’t say anything to us as we noticed when we scammed our BP. Is this customary? It’s an hour flight so I don’t really care but more so it was the principle of the situation that resulted in a split party.
