On May 24, 1974, two friends and I made the trip to downtown Portland to see Kiss in concert at the Paramount Theater, their first tour. They had just released their first self titled album and we loved it. We got to the venue early and decided to walk around the building. The Paramount Theater was housed in a building that was fronted by Broadway and the Park Blocks behind. As we were walking behind the building on Park we heard some guys calling down to us from the second floor windows. We looked up and four long hair guys were standing at the windows asking if we had any pot. I happened to have a small amount in a baggie I didn’t mind giving up so I threw it up to them. It wasn’t much, but enough to give them a little bit of a buzz. After that we went back around to the front, got in line, and ended about 6 rows back from the stage. The show was short but absolutely fantastic. The tickets were only $3.50, but I would have paid 10 times that much and it would have been worth it.
I don’t know to this day if it was the members of KISS that asked us for the pot, but I like to think it was, and that it helped to make their first trip to Portland a good one.
