Proper push to get hired

I just recently applied for a reporting position in a local CA neighbourhood. I am out of state currently, but did reside there 2 years ago (went to Korea) for more than a few months.
I want to politely push my resume near the top of the candidates. What can I do?
I applied today. Should I email tomorrow? Pitch a story? Submit letters of recommendation/more articles?
